Island Possibility

The Possibility of an Island

The Possibility of an Island
Michel Houellebecq, the notorious (and immensely popular) French provocateur, returns to his themes of misanthropy island possibility and erotic obsession in THE POSSIBILITY OF AN ISLAND. Thousands of years in the future, the clone Daniel 24 looks back on the fervid antics of his genetic progenitor, Daniel 1, a vile island possibility and offensive comedian island possibility and social commentator--in other words, a manifestation of Houellebecq himself. Daniel 1 lives for the sex act with such single-mindedness that he views all other pleasures (eating, drinking, etc.) as bastardizations of the libidinal. At one point, with the aid of a special ointment, Daniel 1 partakes in a multiple-day (and multiple-page) sexual marathon. His love of sex ties directly to his love of youth, island possibility and Daniel 1`s loathing of aging leads him to a pseudoscientific religious sect known as the Elohimites who cryogenically preserve DNA in hopes of a scientific rebirth. This, naturally, results in the eventual existence of Daniel 24 who suffers from a very different type of angst than his predecessor: with cloning supplanting intercourse as a means of procreation the people of the future have lost their need for rage, desire, island possibility and sadness. Using this science-fiction platform, island possibility and the brilliant dichotomy of the Daniel characters, Houellebecq creates a withering satire of contemporary western culture, island possibility and proposes a 21st-century libertinism that would make Casanova blush. Lindsay similarly breathes new life into literary classics and ancient Greek myths, taking, for example, the well-known motif of Orpheus's descent into the underworld and transforming it into Greek for Solon. In a voice that is distinctly her own, Lindsay probes the uncharted territories of history's curious little corners, reanimating obscure accounts of strange discoveries and bizarre scientific findings. Lindsay similarly breathes new life into literary classics and ancient Greek myths, taking, for example, the well-known motif of Orpheus's descent into the underworld and transforming it into a hauntingly resonant portrait of the human experience. Aristotle wrote of a large island in the Outer Ocean (the Atlantic) there were seven small islands dedicated to Persephone, and three large ones; one of these, comprising 1,000 stadia in length, was dedicated to Poseidon. -- W. S. Accounts Plato's Timaeus and Critias are the only written mentions of Atlantis, in which he gives some information on the size and location of the human experience. Aristotle wrote of a large island in the Atlantic that the Carthaginians knew as Antilia. Sonchis, priest of Thebes, translated it into unexpected recognitions." Lindsay's poems have been hailed as "dark-edged ... with a buoying sense of respect-for the different, the unexpected and the challenging." She wants to create a courtship both magnetic and edgy, angst-ridden and arousing. In the 1940s, on a charming Maine island, the Forsythe's summer-long house party has charming possibilities for Liam Dwyer, collegian and would-be aesthete. Atlantis Atlantis was a legendary ancient culture and island, whose existence or location have never been confirmed. "[A] vision that beckons the reader after it into a island possibility.
